['mæȓə], Cotton, amerikanischer Theologe und Schriftsteller, * Dorchester (heute zu Boston, Massachusetts) 12. 2. 1663, ✝ Boston (Massachusetts) 13. 2. 1728; stammte von puritanischen Geistlichen ab (sein Vater war der Theologe und Schriftsteller Increase Mather, * 1639, ✝ 1723). Er gab in seinen mehr als 450 biographischen, historischen, theologischen, literarischen und naturwissenschaftlichen Werken ein umfassendes Bild der puritanischen Kultur Neuenglands, deren religiöse Basis zunehmend durch weltliche Einflüsse erschüttert wurde. Die wichtigsten Dokumente dieser Umbruchzeit sind Mathers Protokolle der Hexenprozesse von Salem im Jahre 1692, »The wonders of the invisible world« (1693; deutsch »Die Wunder der unsichtbaren Welt«), seine monumentale Kirchengeschichte Neuenglands »Magnalia Christi Americana« (1702) im Stil eines christlichen Epos sowie die den pragmatischen Aspekt des Christentums andeutende Schrift »Bonifacius« (1710).
